The L.A. Complex may have set a record as the lowest-rated in-season broadcast drama debut ever, but that doesn’t mean The CW’s new Canadian export is a bad show. In fact, it’s a wonderful guilty pleasure.
The drama focuses on a group of young performers struggling in Hollywood. And it’s a big hit in Canada; it’s even been renewed for a second season. The L.A. Complex may not be catching in the U.S., but here’s why you should watch it anyway.
It’s The Manny Santos Spinoff Degrassi Fans Have Been Waiting For
This show was originally pitched as a Degrassi spinoff for Cassie Steele’s Manny Santos. Her character may now be named “Abby,” but it’s clearly Manny all the way.
Who else leaves Canada against her parents’ wishes in hopes of becoming an actress? Only Manny can sing a song before barfing on a director. And only Manny sleeps with randoms on rooftops. But does Manny Santos say, “Tits?” Apparently she does when working in the champagne room. Thank you Linda Schuyler for showing me the adventures of grown-up Manny.
Hollywood Stereotypes Galore
There’s a hot British guy who has a pilot and every girl wants to sleep with him (and does). There’s a black guy trying to make beats for Drake (nice play Degrassi alums!).
There’s a girl who works as a dancer by day and a stripper by night. And there’s the aging bitch played by Firefly‘s Jewel Staite. Come on, what’s more fun than love triangles and crushed dreams? Answer: Nothing.
Lily Randall Anyone?
Was I the only kid in America watching the short-lived Radio Free Roscoe? Because I absolutely loved that show, particularly the very cool Lily Randall played by Kate Todd.
Yes, she played Natasha on Degrassi. And now she’s playing Katee on The L.A. Complex. She’s an actress working with Connor Lake on their new hospital drama series. She’s also made it quite clear she plans to hook up with him. My, my what has become of Shady Lane?
I’m always pulling for the underdog. Especially when the underdog is a nerd.
Nick is an up and coming comedian who isn’t very funny. But he is adorable. And he really likes
Manny Abby who is sleeping with his pal Connor. As I watched, I just kept hoping Nick would finally get the girl, but to no avail. He’s so awkward, adorable and terrible at being funny that I’ll keep watching and rooting for him.
It’s not often that I’m surprised while watching a teen show. But I was when [SPOILER ALERT] Tariq suddenly hooked up with rapper Kaldrick King.
I honestly did not see a romance, merely a bromance. Until their tongues were in each other’s mouths. I love a good secret romance, especially when it’s in the sometimes homophobic hip-hop world. Can’t wait to see what happens there!
What do you guys think about The L.A. Complex? TV By the Numbers suggests that The CW won’t air Season 2 in the U.S. because of its crappy ratings. Doesn’t that just suck? Don’t we want to see what happens in their Melrose Place-style motel? Tell me in the comments!
