Fashion Flashback…The Fresh Prince of Bel Air

If you’re up early in the morning, you’ve noticed that The Fresh Prince of Bel Air is always on TBS. And thank heavens too! How else would we get to see Will Smith before he became the biggest movie star on the planet? I love watching The Fresh Prince and during my most recent viewing I realized that Will’s outrageous style — and his family’s style — has become trendy all over again.

This is the signature crazy outfit that Will is known for on The Fresh Prince. Maybe 10 years ago this looked ridiculous. Now, I’m amazed how often I see guys walking around in neon striped tops, retro sneakers, matching socks and a baseball cap. Neon is all the rage right now for guys and girls! And don’t even get me started on how cute and enviable Ashley’s little bow clip is!

There’s quite a bit of flannel and plaid in my closet. These remnants from the grunge era have made a big comeback. And it’s so funny to see how often Will and the gang bring the two staples into their wardrobes.

Bright colors once dated The Fresh Prince, but bright patterns, loud winter wear and color blocking are all hot trends for spring 2012. And resident fashionista Hilary is wearing a silky purple blouse that looks almost identical to a top I spotted at Zara just last week. (Also, Hilary and Ashley look adorable in that photo. Fictional sister love!)

Carlton is the premiere in preppy style. Once the laughing stock of his family for his nerdy looks, today Carlton would probably be recruited by Ralph Lauren for Creative Development. This man knows how to wear a mean pastel. And just look at that color peeking out above his sweater! Chic!

Oh the argyle! I love some good argyle! I can just see Bradley Cooper’s Wedding Crashers character looking to Carlton Banks for fashion saavy. After all, it takes a brave man to rock some yellow.

Will and Carlton have very different styles, but they both work then and now. Carlton’s slacks and polo are timeless. And Will’s funky wool vest looks like something straight from Pendleton. Heck, maybe it is! Cool then and cool now!

Once again, varying styles that both work. Carlton needs to give me that V-neck sweater. I’m loving the white stripes. And as a prep, he has to wear a bow tie! Will is still rocking a major vest and a backwards baseball cap. The only thing dating this photo is the fact that the hat is backwards. Does anyone do that anymore? Other than me.

Ashley and Hilary also have different styles — mostly because of their large age difference — but they both stay on trend. You can see Hilary and Ashley both rocking lace. Hilary manages both a cute cocktail dress (Yes, that’s Theo Huxtable in the photo!) and a white lace dress with matching white lace gloves that scream Madonna. And both are considered cute today too. Ashley is only a little girl, but she’s wearing lace like a champ. And accessorizing with another cute bow. She may have more bows than Zooey Deschanel!

Ashley Banks’ teenage style was amazing! Hilary’s style had been very much in-line with the Clueless look, while Ashley wore a lot more grunge wear. That black dress layered over the grey top is legit. Seriously, did she get that from Alexander Wang?

That dress is so va-va-voom! Sexy red? Check. Cool cut-outs? Check. Attitude? Word. Oh Hilary, where did you get that? Because I would love to wear that next time I go to the club.

Did I mention that teen Ashley Banks was also a total hottie? She’s wearing those knee socks like it’s her job. I’m also loving the beanie hat. Not only is it super matchy-matchy with her outfit, but it tones down the look. Instead of looking slutty, the beanie makes it trendy and young.

Ok, the Blossom hat may not be a good look in 2012. But the accessories look like they were ripped off one of the Pretty Little Liars’ necks. And the crochet top? I’ve got one just like it from Forever 21. And I like to wear it off the shoulder too.

A polka dot print maxi skirt? A must. Navy blue blazer? Essential. Crazy pattern dress shirt? Um, let’s not do that look again.

Navy blue stripes? Love it! Denim jackets? Who doesn’t have one?

And last, but not least. Every man should represent his team. Especially if his team is the 76ers! Woo Philly! (Yeah that’s right! Philly! Holler!) Overall, it’s kind of crazy how much of the style has come back into play. Sure Hilary’s weird hats are out, but her suits are chic and so is the rest of this stuff.

What do you think about Fresh Prince fashion? Are you thinking it’s fresh to def or like a total embarrassment?
